You may have noticed that the same medicine can come under many brand names at very different prices. What’s the difference, and is the cheaper one just as good?
Same active ingredient
A medicine’s effect comes from its active ingredient, for example paracetamol or pantoprazole. Medicines with the same active ingredient, strength and dosage form are meant to work the same way, whatever the brand.
Why prices differ
Prices differ because of brand marketing, packaging and the manufacturer’s pricing decisions. Many essential medicines also have price ceilings set by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority.
Talk to us before switching
Some medicines, such as those for epilepsy, thyroid conditions or blood thinning, need extra care when you change brands. Always check with your doctor or our pharmacist first. We’re happy to show you alternatives with the same composition so you can make an informed choice.
